About
I’m a philosopher who writes and speaks about work, meaning, and the good life. For thirteen years I taught at the University of Notre Dame. There I founded and directed the Sheedy Family Program in Economy, Enterprise, and Society, an intellectual community with its own curriculum that serves more than two hundred students a year, and helped create God and the Good Life, which became Notre Dame’s most popular first philosophy course. I also designed The Working Life, a course on the philosophy of work, and I’ve worked with faculty around the country on redesigning their own courses. Along the way I helped make three video series that bring academic philosophy to a wider audience.
I wrote The Good Life Method with Meghan Sullivan (Penguin Press, 2022). My next book, Worklife: A Philosophical Guide, comes out from Princeton University Press in June 2027. In between, I write The Space of Reason on Substack.
In 2027 I’m spending months on the road, visiting schools that are trying something different. You can follow along in the Field Notes.
I live in South Bend, Indiana.
